A heartwarming transformation unfolded when a compassionate family stepped in to provide care and support for a tiny kitten and her devoted cat mom.
In the preceding month, a stray cat and her kittens were discovered in dire straits, exposed to the elements without a proper shelter. Their arrival at an animal shelter, while a rescue from the streets, proved to be an initially challenging experience for the feline family. It became abundantly clear that they urgently required a temporary foster home and a loving caregiver.
When Karly Saltarski, one of the co-founders of Salty Animal Rescue, caught wind of their distressing situation and learned that there were no immediate takers to provide assistance, she wholeheartedly accepted the responsibility. She asked, “With the sheer number of animals in dire need of help, how could we possibly say no?”
Soon after their arrival, it became apparent that the road ahead would be fraught with challenges.
Tragically, at the shelter, the cat mom, named Summer, lost one of her kittens, and shortly after being placed in foster care, another kitten succumbed to an upper respiratory infection. Left with only one surviving kitten, Winter, Summer was determined to keep her offspring safe at all costs.
Karly embarked on a relentless effort to nurse Winter back to health, providing round-the-clock tube feedings, medication, tender care, and a generous dose of love. She expressed her commitment, saying, “I’m doing everything within my power to ensure the little one’s survival.”
Although Summer struggled to produce milk, she continued to shower her surviving kitten with all the love and care she could muster. Winter’s condition fluctuated, but Karly remained steadfast, ensuring constant feeding and hydration.
After numerous sleepless nights, Winter finally displayed signs of improvement. Her breathing became more stable, her weight increased, and her eyes started to clear.
Karly expressed her delight, “She’s regaining her kitten-like spirit. Her eyes are noticeably less swollen, and thanks to the nebulizer and oxygen, her breathing has improved significantly.”
As Winter’s independence grew, Summer had the opportunity to bond with her human caregivers, enjoying the attention, playing gleefully, and rediscovering her inner kitten.
Over the course of a touch-and-go one-and-a-half weeks, Karly remained uncertain about Winter’s chances of survival. However, the kitten proved resilient and began to thrive. With clear, bright eyes, a fluffy coat, and newfound energy, Winter appeared transformed into a brand-new kitten.
Karly continued to hand-rear Winter until she was ready to transition to solid food, while Summer took charge of the rest of her nurturing. The kitten was left to grow and flourish.
Karly shared, “Considering all she’s been through and being the only surviving kitten, it’s understandable that she may be a bit behind. However, she’s catching up quickly and beginning to exhibit all the typical kitten behaviors. She’s now eating on her own and using the litter box.”

Now, Winter has grown into a more self-reliant and confident kitten, while Summer has the chance to enjoy some well-deserved “me-time” with her human companions. Winter’s newfound appetite and enthusiasm for solid food have turned her into a champion eater. She exudes fearlessness and playfulness, even making friends with a much larger dog.
Summer, on the other hand, is ready to retire from her motherly duties and embrace the attention she so dearly craves.
Karly expressed her sentiments, saying, “She’s a joyful, playful girl who seizes every opportunity to play. She’s the kind of cat that appreciates every bit of pampering and is sure to express her gratitude. She’s always purring, loves being held, and is sure to be a delightful snuggle companion for her new family.”
Both Summer and Winter now enjoy a life of security, never having to worry about food or shelter. They have embraced their new roles as cherished indoor kitties, leaving behind the sweet sound of contented purring wherever they go.
