No-Fail Slow Cooker Christmas Cake Recipe Gains Popularity – Only Four Ingredients Needed

An Australian mother has recently shared her foolproof Christmas cake recipe, and it’s causing quite a sensation among home cooks.
In a Facebook group, she proudly presented her latest creation—a Christmas cake that she claims was effortlessly prepared using a slow cooker.
The secret to this festive delight? A kilogram of mixed fruit combined with a blend of apple and orange juice, and a touch of elderberry port.
As is customary with Christmas cakes, the dried fruits require time to soak up the liquid. To achieve this, the woman wisely allowed the mixture to sit overnight.
Once the mixture had properly absorbed the flavors, she incorporated two cups of self-raising flour.
Her instructions were simple: “Mix the fruit with the liquid overnight, then stir in the flour and let it cook for eight hours on low. Remember to add water halfway up the tin.”
While she used a slow cooker to prepare the cake, she first placed the uncooked batter in a separate tin. Water was then added to the slow cooker, ensuring it didn’t exceed the halfway mark of the baking tin.
The cake was left to cook for eight hours on a low temperature setting. The steam generated by the slow cooker imparted a unique ‘steamed’ quality to the Christmas cake, setting it apart from conventionally baked cakes.
Unsurprisingly, her post triggered a flurry of comments from eager home cooks, all eager to try this uncomplicated recipe. One person remarked, “I feel like we need to try this,” while another enthusiastically added, “sounds great, might have a go.”
Some commenters shared their own variations of the recipe, experimenting with additions such as chai tea, and even embracing the malty flavors of beer.
Ingredients:
- One kilogram of mixed fruit
- 750mL of liquid (a mix of orange juice, apple juice, and port)
- Two cups of self-raising flour
Method:
- Mix the fruit with the liquid overnight.
- Once the mixture is ready, stir in the flour.
- Cook the mixture for eight hours on low.
Be sure to place the cake in a separate tin and add water, ensuring it doesn’t exceed the halfway mark of the cake tin.
This isn’t the first time a four-ingredient Christmas cake has made waves online. However, one person who shared their recipe mentioned using a tea towel under the lid.
According to Slow Cooker Central, using a tea towel is essential when cooking certain dishes as it absorbs excess moisture.
“The tea towel is there to absorb condensation and prevent it from dripping into the dish inside. It’s often used when making cakes and bread, where you don’t want them to turn soggy.”
When using a tea towel with a slow cooker, it’s advisable to fold up any excess fabric onto the lid to prevent it from hanging over the hot outer casing of the slow cooker.
