Melissa Joan Hart, a Nashville resident and former Clarissa Explains It All star, recently shared her experience of the shooting that occurred at the Covenant School on her What Women Binge podcast. The shooting, which resulted in the deaths of three 9-year-old students and three teachers, left the community in shock and grief.
Hart and her husband were on their way to a parent-teacher conference when they saw a group of children and a teacher crossing a five-lane street. At first, Hart didn’t understand what was happening, but as she saw the look of concern on the teacher’s face, she realized that something was wrong. She got out of her car and helped the children cross the street, all the while trying to keep her own fear and worry hidden from them.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Hart and her community struggled to come to terms with the tragedy. She met a woman whose children were in the school that had been attacked, and they prayed together. The community is tight-knit, despite being part of a large city, and many are grieving the loss of loved ones.
Hart struggled to find the right words to describe what had happened. “Is tragic the right word? Is horrendous the right word? It’s definitely not accidental… Unbelievable?” she said. She encouraged her listeners to donate to those affected by the shooting and planned to send pizza to first responders as a small gesture of thanks.
While the shooting was a devastating event for the community, Hart’s willingness to share her experience and encourage others to help shows the resilience and compassion of the human spirit. As the community mourns and begins to heal, we can all do our part to support them in whatever way we can.
