Terry Sanderson, a retired optometrist, filed a civil lawsuit against actress Gwyneth Paltrow, alleging that she collided with him while skiing at the Deer Valley ski resort in 2016. Sanderson suffered four broken ribs and a permanent traumatic brain injury as a result of the incident and sought damages from Paltrow initially amounting to $3.1 million, which was later reduced to $300,000 by the judge. In response, Paltrow counter-sued Sanderson for a symbolic $1 and attorneys’ fees.
The recent verdict of the case declared that Paltrow was not at fault, which means that Sanderson will have to pay Paltrow’s legal fees and a dollar. Sanderson expressed disappointment over the verdict, admitting that he regrets going through with the lawsuit. However, his legal team is reportedly considering an appeal, according to his attorney Robert Sykes. Sykes cited several trial errors, including the judge allowing Paltrow’s lawyers to delve into Sanderson’s past, which he found unrelated to the allegations against Paltrow.
Sanderson spoke about the pain of suing a celebrity, acknowledging that Paltrow has her own version of the truth about what happened on the slopes back in 2016. Despite the outcome of the case, Sanderson appreciated Paltrow’s response after the verdict, saying that it was sweet of her to tell him, “I wish you well.”
The legal fees that Sanderson owes to Paltrow could be as much as $1 million, as reported by The New York Post. Sanderson is reportedly pondering whether or not suing a high-profile celebrity was worth it. Sanderson’s legal team is weighing all of their options before making a final decision on whether to appeal the verdict.
