A young girl was viciously attacked by a pit bull in Chesterville, Maine, sustaining extreme injuries that required more than 1,000 stitches. The incident occurred on February 18 at a neighbour’s home, where the six-year-old girl, Lily, had gone to visit her friend.

As Lily was sitting at the table, the dog lunged at her, prompting her to raise her shoulders in defence, a move that may have saved her life. The dog let go only when its owner walked into the kitchen, by which time Lily had sustained horrific injuries to her face and body.

Lily was rushed to a nearby hospital and later transferred to a medical centre in Boston, where she underwent a 12-hour surgery to stitch up her wounds. She is currently unable to talk due to stitches on her face, but her mother reports that she has been responsive and able to communicate by blinking. Lily remains in hospital under sedation, but her family is hoping for a speedy recovery.

Animal control officials refused to comment on the incident but stated that they were working with the police to have the dog put down. The pit bull was quarantined for ten days following the attack.

The incident has incurred significant medical expenses for Lily’s family, who have set up a GoFundMe page to help with the costs. They are also grappling with the emotional trauma of the attack, with Lily’s mother expressing her distress at seeing her daughter tied down to prevent her from removing the medical tube.
