Ed Sheeran, the popular singer-songwriter, is about to release his latest album titled ‘-‘ (Subtract) on Sunday. In a recent interview, Sheeran revealed that the inspiration behind this album was a mix of personal grief and hope.
According to the artist, he had been working on Subtract for 10 years, trying to create the perfect acoustic album. However, at the beginning of 2022, a series of events changed his life, mental health, and perspective on music and art. At this point in his life, his wife Cherry Seaborn was pregnant with their second daughter, Jupiter. The couple welcomed their second child in May 2022, after their first daughter Lyra Antarctica was born in August 2020.
Sheeran described writing songs as his therapy and revealed that he wrote this album based on his deepest, darkest thoughts. “Within the space of a month, my pregnant wife got told she had a tumour, with no route to treatment until after the birth. My best friend Jamal, a brother to me, died suddenly and I found myself standing in court defending my integrity and career as a songwriter. I was spiralling through fear, depression and anxiety,” he said.
The artist explained that he felt like he was drowning, and he was struggling with depression and anxiety. He revealed that he didn’t feel like he could put a body of work into the world that didn’t accurately represent where he was and how he needed to express himself at this point in his life. Therefore, this album is purely a reflection of that. It’s opening the trapdoor into his soul. “For the first time, I’m not trying to craft an album people will like. I’m merely putting something out that’s honest and true to where I am in my adult life,” he said.
This album marks the end of Sheeran’s decade-spanning mathematical album era after releasing his debut album ‘+’ in 2011, followed by ‘x’, ‘÷’ and ‘=’. Sheeran collaborated with Aaron Dessner on writing and production. The duo began creating the album in February last year and wrote over 30 songs during their month together in the studio. Eventually, 14 songs made it into the album’s tracklist.
Sheeran’s latest album promises to be an emotional and honest portrayal of his life and is highly anticipated by fans worldwide.
