If you’ve ever wished for the moon on a stick, photographer Daniel Antoniol from Brazil takes that desire to a whole new level with his captivating moon-themed art. Through his lens, the moon becomes a versatile subject, playing football, being loaded into a car’s boot, and even screwing into light fittings.
Daniel Antoniol’s artistic series is a masterclass in perspective manipulation, where he skillfully distorts reality to make the moon appear as small as a lightbulb and light enough to be held in various scenes. From being transported in a wheelbarrow to being raised in a crate, the moon’s possibilities seem endless under Daniel’s imaginative lens.
The genesis of Daniel’s lunar love affair can be traced back to the lockdown in 2020 when he found himself isolated at his parents’ countryside farm in Brazil’s Minas Gerais region. He reminisces, “The moon was a great companion during the Covid pandemic and it was with her that I managed, even in lockdown, to go out to travel the world and the universe with my imagination.”
While his day job revolves around civil engineering, photography has always been Daniel’s passion. Gazing at the sky for inspiration during the pandemic, he merged his love for the cosmos with his art. Creating these extraordinary moon-themed photos is a meticulous process that demands patience and precision. Each shot takes days to set up, ensuring the moon is perfectly framed and in sharp focus.
“I take pictures of the moon in all its phases, it’s a real passion,” Daniel shares. Transforming these snapshots into stunning final images takes a few more hours, involving a collage technique to seamlessly integrate the moon into the original scenery. “A complete job, from photography to treatment, usually takes no more than a day or two,” he adds.
Daniel relies on his Canon T6 camera with a 75-300mm lens to capture the intricate details of the moon, while a 18-55mm lens is used to frame the surrounding landscapes. Over time, his moon-inspired artwork has gained recognition, but Daniel remains grounded. “The photos convey peace. This is my biggest goal with this artwork,” he expresses.
While physically journeying to the moon remains a distant dream, Daniel’s art bridges the gap. “Through art, I can take people there with me,” he enthuses. As he continues to spread positive energy through his creative pieces on social media, Daniel’s aspiration is to immortalize his art, with the moon serving as his muse and conduit.
