HBO’s upcoming show, The Idol, is set to premiere on Sunday, June 4 at 9 p.m. A new trailer for the erotic drama has been released, featuring Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd in Sam Levinson’s revamped version. The series previously stirred up controversy after production insiders alleged to Rolling Stone that the show was essentially “torture porn.” However, the stars of the show have expressed their support for co-collaborator Sam Levinson.

Depp plays singer Jocelyn, who is on a mission to reclaim her status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America after a nervous breakdown derailed her last tour. Her passions are reignited by Tedros (The Weeknd), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. The official synopsis teases whether Jocelyn’s romantic awakening will take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul.

The two-minute trailer is packed with steamy scenes, which shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who has watched Levinson’s wildly successful HBO show Euphoria. The Idol is co-created by Levinson and The Weeknd, and underwent a creative overhaul last year. A Rolling Stone exposé featured anonymous sources who claimed the show had “gone wildly, disgustingly off the rails.” However, stars Depp and The Weeknd have expressed their support for Levinson, stating that he created an environment in which they felt comfortable and safe to be “free” and “vulnerable.”

There have been rumors of conflict between The Weeknd and Levinson, but sources have dismissed them. The show remains very much about Depp’s character, and she has been an integral part of the creative process. HBO issued a statement in support of the show, stating that the creative team has been committed to creating a safe, collaborative, and mutually respectful working environment. The Idol will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month in the out of competition selection.
